Rare vinyl for sale

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (CBS 8) - The hissy, scratchy vinyl sounds of my misspent youth live again in Alan Garth's music library.

"For me it's everything. It's the artwork, just the size, the smell, the feel and the sound. It's real warm," Alan said.

Yeah baby, a 12-inch LP (or Long Playing, for you squares) with readable liner notes and artistic gatefolds. It just doesn't get any more groovy.

"The CDs don't have the same feel," Alan said. "I like putting the needle on the record, and it's kind of hard to explain. It's just a love."

Alan's not alone in his love for vinyl. Here's a stat guaranteed to blow your mind.

"2009 was one of the record years - 2.5 million units sold on vinyl," Alan said.

So four times a year, Alan brings vinyl lovers together to swap and sell their personal collections of albums and 45s. The first collectors show of the New Year takes place on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

"It's in Hillcrest at this placed called The Center and the address is 3909 Center Street," Alan said.

Searching through the collectors bins, you just might find that needle drop in a haystack.

"That's kind of the beauty of it. You never know what you are going to find," Alan said. "There's always a plentiful supply of 60s and 70s rock and soul."

And every so often you'll discover a rare gem, like one from Miles Davis.

"This was the original cover that they almost immediately took off the market. The cover depicts a white woman with her kid. In 1958 that was taboo for a black artist," Alan said.

Old school, new school, no school - there's nothing quite as cool as the hip vibe of vinyl.
