SPRING VALLEY, Calif. (CBS 8) – The family of the Spring Valley man killed in a car crash Friday near Steele Canyon High School is coping with their loss while his son is recovering at a local hospital.

According to the CHP, Andrew Bellatti, 18, was driving a red Mustang westbound on Campo Road around 4:20 p.m. Friday when he veered into the eastbound lane. The Mustang collided head-on with a minivan driven by David Norman Reid, of Spring Valley.

Reid, 50, was killed at the scene. Reid's son Garrett, a passenger in the minivan, was taken to a local hospital with major injuries.

Bellatti and a 16-year-old passenger in the Mustang were also taken to the hospital with injuries.

The CHP said the speedometer on the Mustang at the time of the impact read 80 mph. The speed limit on Campo Road in that area is 55 mph.

Authorities are continuing their investigation and have not said what charges may be pending against Bellatti.

Garrett Reid, 17, was released from Sharp Memorial Hospital Sunday after undergoing surgery on his wrist and suffering other injuries.

Bellatti was released from Sharp Memorial Hospital on Saturday.

A scholarship fund at Steele Canyon High School has been set up in honor of David Reid. Those interested in donating should send their checks in care of the Steele Canyon High School PTA.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31, at Steele Canyon High School. It will be open to the public.
