Local golfer makes pro debut at Torrey Pines

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (CBS 8) - When Blake Trimble tees it up on Thursday, it will be the start of living his dream.

Trimble is at Torrey Pines on a sponsor's exemption, which puts him in the same company this week as John Daly and Rocco Mediate - big name players reminding him he has hit the big time.

"The butterflies will be going for the first couple holes, I'm sure," Trimble said.

As for goals, Trimble has set them high.

"As far as goals go, I'm not going to put anything on the table. One goal in mind is to try to get into contention and give it a run. I'm here to try and win. I'm not here to just make the cut, I'm here to play some great golf," he said.

Trimble has been playing great golf since high school when he won the CIF championship as a freshman. That earned him a spot in our Beat the Pro feature.

He played at Torrey Pines High, then went to UNLV for two years before playing at USD, where he helped the Toreros win a league title in 2008 and a berth to the national championships in 2009. He attended his final class at USD just three days ago.

"Just got done with Spanish class, which was nice. Not the best at Spanish, so it's nice to get that under my belt," he said.

Now he embarks on his dream of playing professional golf, something he's known he's wanted to do since he was a boy. He's now nearly eight years older, and at age 22 the dream becomes reality on Thursday.

"I had a hard time sleeping last night, excited about being out here," Trimble said. "I'm looking forward to it and it's going to be a great week."
