Madison High's Chris Riley getting back on track

LA JOLLA, Calif. (CBS 8) - For Chris Riley, 2010 hopes to be a swing year.

Last year Riley started looking like his old self. His career peaked in 2004 when he played for the United States Ryder Cup team.

"I lost to Daly in that playoff in '04 and that was really exciting," he said.

He finished top 30 on the money list in consecutive years, but then things started to slip.

"It's just been me. I can't blame anybody but myself," Riley said.

By 2006 he had lost his PGA card and had to go back to qualifying school.

"Q school is never fun," he said.

Last year he finished 129th on the PGA Tour money list, four spots shy of automatically retaining his card for this year. But success in Q school last month has him back as a full-time player.

"I still think I can play, I still think I can win. Any week you're here you get your putter hot, you can still play and win," he said.

Riley's goal this year is to win an event.

"The last couple of years, been trying to get my game back. Making cuts, some top 10s is good, but now I would like to win," he said.

"He's on top of his game, he's on top of his swing. He's got the right attitude for this year. He's going to do really well," swing coach Bob Knee said.

And there would be no better place for him to achieve that goal than at Torrey Pines.

"Its very hard out here to win, but why not shoot for the stars," Riley said.
