SAN DIEGO, Calif. (AP) - Two Mexican men have pleaded not guilty to charges they guided a boat packed with suspected illegal immigrants into San Diego from Mexico, resulting in the drowning deaths of two passengers when the vessel capsized.

Fifty-year-old Fernando Figueroa and 45-year-old Javier Jimenez appeared in federal court in San Diego Tuesday on an indictment that charges them with bringing in illegal aliens resulting in death. If convicted, they face a maximum sentence of life in prison.

U.S. authorities say they saw about two dozen people in the 30-foot boat that crashed in the surf off San Diego's La Jolla shores Jan. 16. A 34-year-old Mexican man and an 18-year-old Guatemalan woman died.
