Good Earth Plant Company - Vertical veggies

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (CBS 8) - When the folks at Good Earth Plant Company want some from veggies or herbs, all they do is clip them right off their wall.

"We've got parsley, we've got some beets, we've got some mint, a little bit of rosemary, strawberries," Jim Mumford said.

Mumford has developed a wall system to grow vegetables vertically.

"This is a module and you can see that it's like a plastic crate, and there's soil inside there and there's a landscape fabric. It's like a pillowcase in there," Jim said.

The crates are then placed on a lean while the root system develops and then eventually they are stood upright and the modules are connected to create a wall garden.

When it comes to vertical gardens, it's been a series of trials and errors for the Good Earth Plant Company, and most of their experiments take place in their rooftop lab.

"This is about 1,700 square feet. We planted this just about three years ago," Jim said.

But eventually, what goes down must come up.

"We have vertical wall systems from about $50 a square-foot, to the ones you see down there that are highly engineered. They're a couple hundred dollars a square-foot," Jim said.

The Good Earth Plant Company grows living, vertical, eatable art.

"It's very different. It looks awesome when they fill in and grow out nicely," Jim said.

It's also just about as fresh as you can get - all in all, just another veggie in the wall.
