Identity thieves caught on tape at East County store

Posted: Updated:

EL CAJON, Calif. (CBS 8) - There's a CrimeFighters Alert about a team of identity thieves working in the East County. The good news is, when they hit a store in Parkway Plaza, they were caught on tape.

The surveillance photos show a team of identity thieves inside the Parkway Plaza Sears store in November. There are four suspects in all using a fake credit card to purchase several hundred dollars worth of merchandise, including a television.

El Cajon police found out about the crime weeks later, when the credit card owner noticed unauthorized purchases on his bill. Exactly how the thieves obtained the credit card number is still under investigation.

"If you don't shred your statement when you're done with it, or you don't shred your receipt when you're done with it, then that's information that can be picked up through your trash," El Cajon Police Department Sgt. Fenton Sue said.

The video shows a black couple and a white couple making the purchases.

"We have one white female who was the one that presented the card. She was joined by a white male who placed items on the counter as she was purchasing them," Sgt. Sue said.

The woman shown in red (what looks like pink in the surveillance photos) is believed to be a light-skinned, African American, according to police. Her partner in crime is an African American male wearing a t-shirt with the word "Chamorro" on the front.

"We appreciate the help if somebody from the public recognizes somebody," Sgt. Sue said.

If you have any information, El Cajon police would like to hear from you. Or if you would like to remain anonymous, you can contact San Diego Crimestoppers.
