USS Higgins back in San Diego after relief mission

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (CBS 8) - The first U.S. Navy ship to arrive after Haiti's massive earthquake returned to San Diego Wednesday following a six-month deployment.

The USS Higgins was on its way back to San Diego during its last month of deployment when it rerouted to Port-au-Prince to provide assistance to victims of the Jan. 12 quake.

The guided-missile destroyer served as a refueling flight deck for Coast Guard and Navy helicopters flying goods and services and evacuating victims to medical facilities, the Navy said.

The earthquake has killed up to 200,000 people and left another 2 million needing aid, according to the United Nations.
