Crimetracker maps thefts & robberies in La Mesa

LA MESA, Calif. (CBS 8) - There's a News 8 CrimeFighters Alert about a string of pedestrian robberies in La Mesa. The latest mugging happened Tuesday afternoon, when robbers attacked a woman using a cell phone.

La Mesa resident Lois Pressley carries her cell phone whenever she goes for walks in her neighborhood. But that's not all she carries.

"Just because I have a cell phone doesn't mean I'm walking empty-handed. I don't walk around empty-handed, OK?" she said.

Lois has heard about thieves in the area mugging people and taking their cell phones. She keeps an eye out.

"Be aware, stay on the lookout. Don't just walk, walk, walk. Look around, stay aware," Lois said.

The latest robbery happened Tuesday afternoon along Normal Avenue just east of Helix High School. A woman texting on her cell phone was punched in the face, and her cell phone was stolen. Police are looking for two suspects.

"Both of them were black males. They were driving a gold SUV. We didn't get a plate, but we are going to look at that vehicle and see if it's related to any other crimes," La Mesa Police Dept. Lt. David Bond said.

The News 8 CrimeFighters ran the numbers for robberies and thefts in La Mesa over the past 90 days within a one-mile radius of the intersection of University Avenue and Parks Avenue. Our Crimetracker map shows 10 robberies and 40 thefts, all within the past three months.

Most of the robberies are not related, and police did arrest several suspects in an earlier series of pedestrian robberies. Still, officers urge people to take precautions.

"You don't want to display your expensive electronics, jewelry or anything that draws attention to you," Lt. Bond said.

Lois says she's ready for anything that comes her way.

"I'm being nice to you all now, but I usually walk around with my 'bulldog' on. So if they want some they can have some," she said.
