Last farmer in San Diego

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (CBS 8) - In the soul of the city beats the heart of a farmer. For 38 years, Bill Tall has been tending his organic garden in City Heights.

"Sometimes you find a place to live and it's good forever," Bill said.

He's been able to make a decent living off his acre and a half, but that's not why City Farmers Nursery stays in business.

"The whole idea is to come to a place for a good experience, not just to buy something," Bill said.

Farmer Bill's plot is built for browsing.

"We have a few farm animals. We have rabbits and turtles and fish and tortoises and just things for the kids to enjoy and not cost a ton of money," Bill said.

There's a 43-year-old horse named Clyde who shares a pen with his buddy the goat and a gaggle of geese, chickens and ducks. Smack dab in the middle of this menagerie is Bill's house.

Everybody seems happy here at City Farmers Nursery -- the customers who come to buy plants and gardening supplies, kids who are here to check out the critters and the farmer who cheerfully shares 38 years of growing experience.

"I could spend seven days a week up at the counter at the sales area, just talking to people and sharing the joy I have in doing this," Bill said.

Through gardening, Bill has discovered the secret to a bountiful existence.

"It's the slowing down of life and enjoying it a little more," Bill said.

Slowing down and enjoying life -- it's a lesson that we've almost lost along with our agricultural roots, but it's still alive and sprouting at City Farmers Nursery.
