Garden of earthly delights

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (CBS 8) - Some folks just seem to be gifted with a green thumb, but few people get the kind of amazing results in their backyards like the woman you're about to meet.

Getting back to the garden is a daily ritual for Laura LeFleur. She has sculpted her backyard into a floral sanctuary that would rival Eden.

"I've always been a garden fan. My father was a great gardener and luckily it rubbed off on me," she said.

There are actually many different gardens nestled into Laura's one and a half acres. All of the artwork as well is Laura's, from her whimsical garden goddess to her magnificent mosaic work.

In this garden, anything goes and everything grows, although these days there's a definite lean toward drought-tolerant plants.

"Anywhere I travel, I bring back plants. I'm big into zonal denial," she said.

Wind down one path and you'll think you're at a five-star resort. Wander down another and you'll find yourself in the family dining room, complete with an outdoor wood-fired pizza oven. The dining room offers panoramic views and aromatic whiffs of the rosemary snail garden.

This is Laura's favorite time of year.

"The roses are just starting to bloom," she said.

It's under a rose-covered canopy that you'll encounter the jumping chickens. They too seem to flourish in the garden.

The flowering fantasia is a bountiful blend of robust and rustic. Here, trees, herbs, bushes, grasses, vines, ferns and flowers provide the tapestry for living, breathing, breathtaking art.
