Hooked on hooking

Posted: Updated:

SAN MARCOS, Calif. (CBS 8) - It may look like a quiet retirement community, but the word on the street is that Woodland Village is the home of the Happy Hookers.

"When it comes to hooking, I'm pretty good," one knitter said.

Some of these women have been at it for a while.

"For four years, some of them. We have new hookers. New hookers are always welcome," a Woodland Village employee said.

For the Happy Hookers, it's a numbers game.

"Sometimes I do four a day," a knitter said.

And they've got more business than they can handle.

"Our hands are busy," one knitter said.

What the Happy Hookers and the Mad Hatters like to do is get together every Friday and hook, knit or crochet clothing that is all donated.

"We supply Palomar Hospital with the baby hats. We do hope hats for women with breast cancer. We do sweaters for Guidepost and blankets for the Wounded Warriors," a Woodland Village employee said.

"I'm making another hat right now for another baby, but I've made over 1,000 in a year and a half," a knitter said.

These hookers surely have a heart.

"It makes me feel good. There are a lot of babies or mothers that can't knit. They don't have the time with their newborn," a knitter said.

Outside of their weekly philanthropic knitting sessions, I wonder what other extracurricular activities the Happy Hookers were involved in.

"Oh those are secret. We don't tell on anybody around here. We might gossip, but we don't let it go beyond here," a knitter said.

"What happens at Woodland, stays at Woodland," a Woodland Village employee said.

What happens at Woodland is an energetic, caring community of seniors who continue to contribute their time and talent to those in need. Now you know why these hookers are happy.
