Firefighters gain ground on Riverside County fire

Posted: Updated:

CORONA, Calif. (AP) — A 900-acre wildfire is in the smoldering stage in western Riverside County.

No homes are threatened.

State and Riverside County fire Capt. Scott Lane says the blaze that began yesterday in the dry hills east of Corona is 70 percent contained Friday morning but there's no active flame and the blaze is not expected to grow.

He says about 230 firefighters will be mopping up hot spots and the fire is expected to be fully contained at 6 p.m.

Lane says the fire was caused by a spark when a tractor plowing weeds under for fire prevention struck a rock.
