The class of 2010

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (CBS 8) - For those of us who started parenting in 1992, something almost inconceivable is about to happen. In the blink of an eye, a snap of the fingers, literally overnight, our children are about to graduate high school.

Everybody warned us that the days of raising kids would fly by, but I'm not ready to let go. I'm about as prepared to be an empty nester as I am to meet my maker or cash in my 401K.

Still, I wanted to take this one moment in time to reflect on the joys of being a parent. So here with me to look back on our lives together is a member of the class of 2010, my son Miles.

Larry: Miles, why don't you tell the people why you are here today?

Miles: Because you came and got me out of biology class.

L: No, I mean when it comes to our father-son relationship, what grade would you give me as a dad?

M: About the same one I'm getting in biology.

L: You're my only child, so I had no fatherly experience. You have to make allowances for that.

M: Speaking of my allowance… But seriously dad, we've had a lot of great times together and we'll have a lot more, although you might not remember all of them.

L: I have to admit that as I get older, my memory is getting worse. At times I can't remember things that just happened.

M: Dad, can I have my allowance?

L: I guess what I want to say is that I know I've made mistakes, but I've always tried to do what I thought was best for you.

M: I know that dad, and I appreciate it.

L: I would do anything for you.

M: How about helping study for my biology test?

L: Anything but that.

M: What about giving me my allowance?

L: Get outta here.

M: Love you, dad.

L: Love you, son.
