Steaking acclaim

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Mission Hills is just one of those neighborhoods with a really comfortable feel, and News 8's Larry Himmel shows off a new Mission Hills steak house that's a perfect fit in this Dining Out with San Diego Magazine.

If you're looking for an upscale steak house that's a bit old school then just head to the hills - Mission Hills and The Wellington Steak and Martini Lounge.

"The Wellington is interesting. It sort of has that feeling like maybe I've been here before in the 30s or 40s. It has that supper club feel," said San Diego Magazine Food Critic Robin Kleven Dishon. "It has a very elegant, old-fashioned feeling. At the same time, they are doing some new things with food."

"For a place like the Wellington, I expected the Beef Wellington to be a standout. It was. They take a great quality filet, wrap it in mushroom and then wrap that in a puff pastry, roast it. It came out rare as ordered, very nice piece of meat," continued Kleven. "One thing I really like about the Wellington, you don't only get a good steak, you get a choice of sauces to enhance it."

"They also do an excellent duo of duck. Basically a half duck, the leg, the thigh and the breast and that's served with a wonderful balsamic vinegar and fig sauce that really brings out the essence of the rich duck meat," explained Kleven.

Kleven also said that if you want to go to Wellington, make reservations in advance. It's a small place and sits maybe 30 people.

"You're getting great quality food, a lot of attention to detail and again, a nice special occasion place, and it's right in the middle of Mission Hills," added Kleven.
