California lt. gov race: Newsom versus Maldonado

Posted: Updated:

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Lt. Gov. Abel Maldonado has won the Republican primary to defend his job in November against San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, the Democratic nominee.

Maldonado beat state Sen. Sam Aanestad on Tuesday in his quest to keep the job he was recently appointed to by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Maldonado was skewered by his party last year when he voted for a compromise budget deal that included a tax increase.

The former senator describes himself as an open-minded and pragmatic fiscal conservative.

Newsom touts his small business background and leadership on issues of gay marriage rights and universal health care.

The lieutenant governor is the state's No. 2 job, stepping into the shoes of the governor when that officeholder is out of state or incapacitated.
