The unfairest of the fair

Posted: Updated:

DEL MAR, Calif. (CBS 8) - The San Diego County Fair means different things for different people, and there's no one who's more different than our own Larry Himmel, who shares his favorite things.

Walking right in through a metal detector,
Right past the eyes of a local inspector.
No weapons allowed to threaten our lives,
Even though inside they sell plenty of knives.

Goats, sheep and pigs remain fairly hidden,
Cute little ponies that are constantly ridden,
Cows in their pens never seem just to squawk,
Even though soon they will be auctioned off.

Funnel cakes and cinnabuns and big curly fries,
Food for your tummy that goes straight to your thighs.
Your arteries start clogging, the fun doesn't cease
As long as you're eating something cooked in hot grease.

Huge turkey legs make such a wonderful dinner
When you know you're eating last year's blue ribbon winner.
Don't eat all at once, be sure and save room for more
Just about 200 bucks will feed a family of four.

When the carnies bark with their rigged games
It'll make me mad,
But I simply remember the fair's always fun
And then I don't feel so bad.

Checking out crafts and collections from all sorts of lands
Wondering if some folks have too much time on their hands.
Watching the fearless getting thrown into loops
Shooting over-inflated balls at real bent hoops.

Listening to pitches for gadgets and chamois,
Playing the lotto for big bucks and no whammies.
All the fun at the fair and the joy that it brings,
These are a few of my favorite things.

When the fair starts and the crowds come
And the place is mad,
I simply remember the races soon will be here
And then I feel so glad.
