Vintage Himmel: Father's Day at Disneyland

Posted: Updated:

(CBS 8) - Sunday was the first Father's Day that Larry Himmel spent without his son Miles, who's attending the World Cup in South Africa. It has Larry reminiscing about an event that happened 17 years ago, when the Himmel family spent Father's Day at Disneyland.

Despite its reputation, Disneyland is not always "The Happiest Place on Earth". One problem is that many of us take our kids there before they are ready, before they even have a clue of what Disneyland is all about. Still, dad is there to capture every precious moment on tape.

When it's a child's first day at Disneyland, there are no sacrifices that dads don't make, no humiliation they won't endure, including riding on Dumbo.

Forget the food, rides and adult attractions, you'll spend most of your day in Toon Town, which is about as crowded as downtown Hong Kong. But the biggest sacrifice any parent can make is to sit through the mind-numbing It's a Small World ride.

This isn't the only exhibit in the park that a one-year-old can enjoy. Mine also liked the telephone, and he liked to eat. For a one-year-old, eating is a religious experience.

The crowning moment for any parent at Disneyland comes when his kid meets Mickey Mouse for the first time. My kid grabbed him in the crotch.

I know Miles is too young to enjoy Disneyland, but we just have fun hanging out together anywhere. That's the true joy of fatherhood, to be able to see life again through the eyes of a child, a life that's full of hopes and dreams.
