San Diego may see sales tax increase

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (CBS 8) - After years of cuts to nearly every facet of city government, San Diego may be facing a sales tax increase.

The plan calls for asking city voters in November to increase the sales tax one-half percent on the dollar.

It's one of several options under consideration by Mayor Jerry Sanders to help eliminate a future budget deficit of $72 million and restore recent cuts to fire service, parks and libraries.

The mayor's office hasn't confirmed the option, but several sources within City Hall say Sanders has reached out to a few council members about it.
