ESCONDDO (CNS) - A teenage girl reported being robbed and raped by a gun-wielding masked man today in a culvert near a North County Park, police said.

The 16-year-old told investigators she was walking to the east on a bicycle path alongside the flood-control channel off North Ash Street and East Valley Parkway in Escondido when the assailant confronted her and threatened her with a pistol shortly before 8:30 a.m., Lt. Craig Carter said.

She said the stranger, who was wearing a black ski mask and sunglasses with white frames, stole several possessions from her, then forced her into a patch of shrubbery and raped her. Following the assault, the man fled to the west down the drainage channel.

The victim, who was taken to a hospital for an examination, told police the attacker appeared to be in his 30s and was clad in blue pants and a dirty white T-shirt.

Officers searched for the rapist in areas surrounding the culvert, which runs south of Washington Park, but there were no arrests in the case by late afternoon.

It was unclear what type of items the assailant stole from the teen.
