International soccer match to be played at Petco Park in September

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A soccer match between Chivas USA of Major League Soccer and a top team from Mexico will take place at Petco Park next month, it was announced Thursday.

The second annual "ChivaClasico" on Sept. 14 will see Chivas USA take on Club Deportivo Guadalajara of the Mexican First Division. The two clubs played last year at the Rose Bowl, with Guadalajara winning 2-0.

This will be the second major soccer event at Petco Park. The first, an international match between Mexico and Sweden, drew 30,000 fans.

Chivas USA has appeared in the MLS playoffs five straight years, while Guadalajara is considered Mexico's most successful soccer club, having won 11 league championships.

Word of the event this time has raised some controversy because it will require the removal of the pitcher's mound at the home of the San Diego Padres baseball team during a pennant race.

The grounds crew has reportedly said the mound will be replaced in the same condition as it was. The Padres have fashioned the best record in the National League largely on the strength of pitching.
