Thieves hit ATMs in Lemon Grove, National City

LEMON GROVE (CNS/CBS 8) - Police believe there is a connection between an unsuccessful ATM theft early Friday morning in Lemon Grove and one minutes later in National City where thieves got away with a cash machine.

The attempted theft on Lemon Grove Way was discovered around 3:30 a.m., according to San Diego County sheriff's Lt. Eddie Brock.

The would-be thieves used a van to pull the front doors off the building, then tried unsuccessfully to pull the ATM out, he said.

About 45 minutes later, surveillance video shows a semi truck backing into a gas station and pulling a cash machine off its foundation. Moments later, a white van pulled up and two men in dark clothing loaded the ATM into the vehicle and fled.

Police believe the two incidents are related. An investigation is underway.

There have been a rash of similar ATM thefts and attempted thefts around the county since earlier this year.
