WWII warplane raised from Otay Lakes reservoir

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (AP) - A rare World War II dive bomber was raised 90 feet from the bottom of a San Diego reservoir, then lifted out of the water, drained and set on blocks on dry land for the first time in 65 years.

It officially touched down on shore at 3:50 p.m. Friday.

Lead A&T Recovery diver Keith Pearson says they found the SB2C Helldiver plane 91 feet down and under six or seven feet of organic silt. He says the tail was sticking out but the engine was completely buried. It took two days to dig out the silt. On Friday, the plane was raised.

A crane lifted it 95 percent out of the water and drained it, then set it down on blocks.

He says the draining had to be done slowly so the plane didn't collapse under the wet weight.
