Full containment of El Monte fire expected by Monday night

LAKESIDE (CNS) - A brush fire that burned slightly more than 1,000 acres near El Capitan Reservoir, east of Lakeside, was 60 percent contained as of early Monday, authorities said.

The so-called Monte Fire was reported just after 1 p.m. Saturday on the north side of El Monte Road, said Cal Fire Capt. Daryll Pina. The fire was a few miles west of the reservoir and about five miles north of Interstate 8 at Flinn Springs Road, and spread to the northeast into the Cleveland National Forest.

On Sunday, Cal Fire said it expected to fully contain and control the fire by Monday. Firefighting costs are estimated to be $350,000, said Cal Fire spokeswoman Roxanne Provaznik.

El Monte Park was evacuated Saturday because of the blaze and 10 people were taken from the area by helicopters. Some buildings were threatened by the fire, but no damage was immediately reported, Provaznik said.

Twenty engines, six fire crews, four air tankers, four helicopters and two helitankers battled the flames, Provaznik said.

On Friday, Cal Fire announced that it was adding five brush engines to its ranks because of the recent hot and dry weather, which is conducive to forest fires.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
