Give Blood, Give Life Blood Drive Wednesday

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (CBS 8) - When was the last time you gave blood? On Wednesday you have a chance, and you just might save a life. One local family learned that lesson when their one-year-old son suddenly needed blood.

Isaac Garmo is a perfectly happy seven-year-old playing video games with his family in their Rancho San Diego garage. You'd never know he's a cancer survivor.

"He was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, high-risk, stage 4 at 13-months," mother Anita Garmo said.

Doctors found a seven-inch tumor on Isaac's spine six years ago. Stem cell transplants, radiation, chemotherapy, surgery and a series of blood transfusions saved his life.

"If it wasn't for Isaac receiving so many blood transfusions, he wouldn't be here today. So it definitely makes a difference," Anita said.

On Wednesday, you have a chance to make a difference by giving blood at the KFMB Stations' Give Blood, Give Life Blood Drive in Kearny Mesa. The Garmo family is supporting the blood drive to give back to the community.

"There are a lot of people that need it. People always think other people give, but all it takes is one time, even if you do it just once," Anita said.

Anita and David Garmo never imagined their son would need blood, but today Isaac's recovery is right on track, along with his throwing arm. Isaac is living proof that giving blood saves lives.

"He's great. He just started school and hopefully he'll be starting soccer soon, and he can't wait for that. He's just a happy seven-year-old," Anita said.

Join the KFMB Stations' Give Blood, Give Life Drive Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Dixieline Pro-build on Convoy. All blood types are needed. You must be 17 or older and weigh at least 110 pounds.
