SWAT standoff in Serra Mesa

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man suspected of kidnapping and beating his girlfriend holed up in his Serra Mesa apartment for about five hours Wednesday afternoon before surrendering, police said.

The barricade situation, which ended peacefully shortly after 6 p.m., forced the evacuation of the area surrounding the suspect's residence at 9078 Grammercy Drive.

The kidnapping took place two days ago, San Diego police Lt. Andra Brown said.

"He beat her up and threatened her with a gun," Brown alleged.

The woman, whose name was withheld, said the man dropped her off at her mother's residence, then returned today to threaten her with harm if she reported the incident, Brown said. The women called police.

The victim said the suspect -- whose name was not immediately released -- had several handguns and might be armed, according to Brown.

He was found at his apartment around 1 p.m., and officers had only sporadic contact with him for several hours. At one point, police reached him on his cell phone, but he denied being at the scene, and refused to return or come out, Brown said.
