Campo keeps its cool

CAMPO, Calif. (CBS 8) - While the sun once again seared Campo towards the century mark, Curtis Johnson gave us the local forecast.

"Very hot, and it's going to get hotter," Curtis said.

He wasn't going to let triple digits stop him from his daily chores.

"You gotta work, even if you're old like me," he said.

Mr. Johnson has called Campo home for 40 years. To him, today was just another day in paradise.

"We've got everything we need out here, so I can't complain," he said.

In the noonday sun, while some of the locals along the two-lane cooled their heels, Clay Rosenal, who was digging for gas leaks, brought his own shades.

"I'm from La Mesa. It's a little hotter than I'm used to, that's for sure," he said.

Underground was the place to be.

"It's actually cooler down there," Clay said.

The coolest place in Campo was Angelo's Barber and Beauty Salon, where it was a brisk 72 degrees.

Maria wasn't sweating the heat wave. It was the aftermath that concerned her.

"I'm worried about the electricity bill, how much it's going to be," she said.

Today along toasty Highway 94, the blacktop baked. Edging closer to Lake Morena offered no comfort for those who toiled in the broil. The only relief to be found was inside the Oak Shores Malt Shop.

There are cooler days ahead for the East County, but that brought little comfort today.
