SDSU water main fixed; air conditioning could return Saturday

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The broken water main at San Diego State University is repaired, and school officials hope to restore air conditioning to the main part of campus on Saturday.

The pipe broke Monday night under a walkway near Love Library, sending torrents of water toward the library dome, but quick work by firefighters prevented serious damage.

Since then, about 90 percent of campus has been without air conditioning, in the midst of a heat wave, and non-essential employees were allowed to go home for a couple of days.

The Gateway Center, Alumni Center, most athletic facilities and dormitories -- all along the perimeter of campus -- are on separate air conditioning systems and were unaffected.

Students began moving into the dormitories today. Classes begin Monday.

Sally Roush, the SDSU vice president of business and financial affairs, said repairing the walkway will continue into next week.

Conditions inside Viejas Arena, the one athletic building that was affected by the outage, should be comfortable for Saturday's New Student and Family Convocation, thanks to cooler weather, Roush said.

"I know this has been a trying period, and I am grateful for the generally good spirits and patience all have shown as we have worked to complete these major repairs," Roush wrote in a statement posted on the SDSU web site.
