SAN DIEGO, Calif. (CBS 8) - Loved ones of 65-year-old Marc Durham packed his family's church in Rancho Bernardo Friday to pay tribute to the beloved father and grandfather, one week after an alleged drunk driver took his life.

The Rancho Bernardo resident's family has chosen to forgive Anthony Guarino, the 57-year-old Rancho Bernardo resident charged with Durham's death.

"Forgiveness is key," said Melissa Durham, Marc Durham's daughter. "Like my mother has said, there is no room for hatred. It can just tear you up. And we know that the other family involved I am sure is feeling a lot like we are."

Durham's family said their faith has strengthened them through this difficult time. "How can we ask for forgiveness if we are not willing to forgive ourselves?" Melissa Durham added. "That's always how my family has lived."

Elaine Durham, Marc Durham's wife of 42 years, also hopes her family's loss will serve as a lesson to others never to drive under the influence.

"When you drink and drive, you might as well get a gun and shoot somebody, because it's just as dangerous," she said. "I guess if this (tragedy) saves one person's life, then I would be very happy about that."

Marc Durham, a father of five and grandfather of nine, has just retired from his position as head of security at BAE Systems the week before. The Rancho Bernardo resident had been driving alone to the movies Friday evening when 57-year-old Anthony Guarino, also of Rancho Bernardo, slammed into the back of Durham's car at a stop light on Camino del Norte at Carmel Mountain Road, killing him instantly.

The impact triggered a chain reaction. Eight people in four other vehicles suffered minor injuries.

Guarino will make his first court appearance on Wednesday in San Diego Superior Court. He faces charges of gross vehicular manslaughter and DUI, and could spend up to ten years in prison if convicted.

Marc Durhams' funeral service will be held Saturday, August 28 at 10 am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, located at 15750 Bernardo Heights Pkwy, San Diego, CA 92128. There will be an opportunity to meet and console the family Friday evening from 6 pm to 8 pm, at the same location.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made for the treatment of Breast Cancer to the following:
