Police looking for suspicious SUV seen after teen's shooting

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (CNS) - Investigators are hoping the public can provide tips that lead to a white full-size SUV seen in the area where a teenage girl was fatally shot last week at a Clairemont park, a San Diego police homicide lieutenant said Monday.

The vehicle, possibly a Toyota Sequoia, was spotted on a street adjacent to Lindbergh Park early Friday, around the time 15-year-old Joanna Vargas was struck by a bullet, Lt. Kevin Rooney said.

The day of the shooting, detectives said they were interested in learning more about the SUV, but their position regarding the vehicle has since hardened.

"We do believe it was involved," Rooney said.

The detective refused to say what information led to the change.

Vargas snuck out of her house to go to the park with her boyfriend, her female cousin and the cousin's boyfriend, and were just "hanging out" when she was shot, police said.

There were no calls from the public over the weekend regarding the SUV, which was parked in the 4100 block of Ashford Street and drove off at a normal rate of speed toward Balboa Avenue, according to Rooney.

Anyone with information about the vehicle can call homicide detectives at (619) 531-2293. They can also call the San Diego County Crime Stoppers' anonymous toll-free tip line at (888) 580-8477.
