SAN DIEGO, Calif. (CBS 8) - San Diego County Republicans say they have reason to party: after a two-year hiatus, they now make up the largest party affiliation in the county -- by a margin of fewer than 900 voters.

"I'm here to announce the Republican party is once again the majority party of San Diego County," said Tony Krvaric, chair of the San Diego County Republican Party.

It's a position that Republicans had maintained in the county since 1984, but lost leading up to the last presidential election.

In 2007, San Diego County's registered voters were 39.1 percent Republican and 34.4 percent Democrat, according to the San Diego County Registrar of Voters, but that plurality shifted in the days leading up to the November 2008 elections. At that time, the county had 36.1 percent registered Republicans and 36.3 percent Democrats, a difference of 3,292 voters.

And once again, the tide has shifted. As of last week, Republicans made up 36.22 percent of registered county voters, while Democrats make up 36.16, separated by 891 voters.

"We're just getting started," said Krvaric. "We're trying to expand on our lead.

Local Republicans say since October of last year, their party registered more than 26,000 new Republican voters in an aggressive drive funded statewide by more than $2.2 million from the California Republican Party.

"We started out as a trickle, and it built up to an absolute torrent," added Krvaric.

Local Democrats counter these gains were essentially purchased by the Republicans, using campaign donations from large corporate interests. Democrats say their registration efforts are on a strictly volunteer basis.

San Diego County's Democratic party says it plans to kick off its own grass-roots voter registration drive this weekend.

The deadline to register for the upcoming election is October 18.
