Poway City Council preliminarily approves lighting at Arbolitos Sports Park

Posted: Updated:

In a 4-0 vote, Poway's City Council took the first step toward allowing stadium lights to be installed at Arbolitos Sports Park along Pomerado Road.

Members of the Poway Youth Soccer League say the lighting is critical to allow kids to practice after dark, up until 8pm. The president of the Poway Sports Association says that currently, 500 children enrolled in the soccer league can not practice because there is not enough available field space during the daytime to accommodate.

But homeowners who live near the park say that the city council had promised them when the park was constructed in 1997 that lights would never be permitted. They say that the eight lights, estimated to cost between $500,000 and $700,000, would throw a glare onto their property and into their homes.

Critics of the lighting plan also say it will contribute to noise and traffic pollution, and that it will negatively impact property values. They also question how this project will be funded, and fear that this will also set a precedent for lights to be installed at other city parks.

Over the next several weeks, additional studies on the noise and traffic impact will be undertaken. Poway city council members are scheduled to cast a final vote on the plan on October 19th.
