OCEANSIDE (CNS) - Two apartments were destroyed and four others were damaged in a fast-moving kitchen fire that broke out near Oceanside High School Wednesday morning, authorities said.

The blaze at the Villa Del Rey apartment complex at 515 Grant St. was reported at 12:07 a.m. and firefighters arrived five minutes later, according to Oceanside fire Battalion Chief Pete Lawrence.

It began in a downstairs unit and quickly spread to other units, Lawrence said, adding that the fire was brought under control at 12:34 a.m.

No firefighters were injured but three police officers and five civilians were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and cuts caused by broken glass, Lawrence said.

The American Red Cross was called to assist 14 adults and 18 children who were displaced, he said.

Four chiefs, 40 firefighters, two ladder trucks, eight fire engines, three ambulances and an arson investigator responded to the scene, Lawrence said.

The arson investigator determined that the fire started in the kitchen when a pot of food was left unattended and boiled over, he said, adding that it was made worse when the residents threw water on it.

Damage was estimated at $180,000.
