Ocean Beach has starring role in new TV series

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Dozens of Ocean Beach residents packed the Harp on Newport Avenue Wednesday evening to screen the premiere of "Terriers," a new cable TV drama filmed - and set -  in Ocean Beach.

"We're all just really excited: They call Ocean Beach "Ocean Beach... they don't call it another city," said Denny Knox, executive director of the Ocean Beach Mainstreet Association. "And we have our own police department in the show."

The majority of the filming for this weekly comedic drama, which centers around an ex-cop who partners with his best friend in an unlicensed private detective agency, took place in Ocean Beach in April.

"Ocean Beach has just the perfect setting we have on the show... their attitude, their look," said extras casting  director  Bobby Jonavov. "They're very edgy, very rough. They work well together."

"Everybody gets to know San Diego, "said local actress Veronica Kahn, who has a small role in the series. "We're hoping a lot of people in LA will get to see it, and bring more shows down here."

Ocean Beach's local economy also benefited tremendously from being in the spotlight. According to Knox, the crew of "Terriers" hired roughly 100 local crew members, along with hundreds of cast extras, every week during the shooting. The production of the show helped pump an estimated 420 million into OB's economy during the entire stay.

"They came in with all their people, they employed a lot of local people and some merchants were paid for using their locations," Knox said.
