Actor turns star witness as Malil takes the stand

VISTA, Calif. (CBS 8) - Testimony continued Thursday in the trial of an actor accused of trying to kill his ex-girlfriend.

Shelley Malil took the stand in his own defense Thursday. The victim says Malil stabbed her more than 20 times.

The 45-year-old actor is accused of attempting to kill his ex-girlfriend Kendra Beebe. On Thursday, Malil spoke about the rocky relationship the pair had in the months before he stabbed her 23 times at her San Marcos home in August 2008.

"I don't know what it was, but someone was hitting me with something and all I had was this knife and I just went bananas with the thing," Malil said.

Malil told jurors that the on-again, off-again romance -- which grew from an online chat -- was marked by a rollercoaster of emotions by the mother of two.

The couple fought at an Encinitas beach a day before the stabbing, resulting in Malil getting angry, driving off in Beebe's car and leaving without her.

The next day, Malil, best known for his supporting role in the comedy "The 40-Year-Old Virgin", found the woman drinking with musician David Maldonado on her back patio.

Prosecutors say the assault was a violent, premeditated attack against an ex-lover who made him mad. But Malil says just days before, Beebe had been sending him mixed messages.

Shelley Malil is being held on $3 million bail at the Vista Jail. If he's convicted on all accounts, he faces 21 years to life in prison.
