SAN DIEGO, Calif. (CBS 8) - Leave it to the Marines from Camp Pendleton to pull off the perfect mission. Members of the 15-th Marine Expeditionary Unit convinced some Somalia based pirates to give up without a fight.
It happened in the Gulf of Aden, 85 miles southeast of Mukallah, Yemen. News 8's Jeff Zevely spoke with a former naval commander about the daring operation.
The U.S. Navy says Marine commandos have reclaimed control of a pirate-held vessel off the Somalia coast and taken nine prisoners.
The raid took place just before dawn Thursday. The German-owned Magellan Star was commandeered by pirates a day earlier.
The Navy statement says nine suspected pirates were taken into custody. No injuries were reported among the vessel's crew or the Marine team.
