Coast Guard driver haunted by fatal San Diego crash

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) - The driver of a Coast Guard boat that slammed into another boat during a holiday parade in San Diego says he thinks every night about the 8-year-old boy who died in the crash.

Petty Officer Paul Ramos spoke Friday in Alameda on the fourth and final day of the military equivalent of a preliminary hearing for Coast Guard members charged in the December crash. Ramos faces the most serious charge, involuntary manslaughter, punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports the 21-year-old testified he just wanted to help when responding to a report of a boater stuck in the mud.

Ramos' former boss, Lt. Steven Schultz, said Ramos was sincere and very interested in his job.
