Ex-NL MVP Mitchell to stand trial in assault case

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (AP) — Former National League MVP Kevin Mitchell has been ordered to stand trial after he was accused of assaulting a man at a golf club in Southern California.

A judge on Wednesday scheduled the ex-San Francisco Giant and New York Mets slugger for trial Nov. 3 in San Diego County.

The 48-year-old Mitchell faces up to four years in prison if convicted of battery and assault charges. He has pleaded not guilty and is free on $25,000 bail.

Mitchell, who won the NL MVP as a Giant in 1989, allegedly punched another golfer several times on the head in July at the Bonita Golf Club course. The San Diego Union-Tribune reports the alleged altercation happened because Mitchell was upset the golfer had spoken disparagingly about him.

Mitchell, who won a World Series with the Mets in 1986, was arrested in 1999 on suspicion of felony battery against his father.
