Feds: 39 fugitive immigrants arrested in SD County

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Immigration officials say 39 illegal immigrants were detained in San Diego County during a three-day effort to catch fugitives linked to crimes and pending deportation orders.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said in a statement Monday that half of the immigrants arrested by the Fugitive Operations Team had prior convictions like domestic violence, indecent exposure, vehicle theft, fraud, driving under the influence and drug violations.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that half of the immigrants had returned to the U.S. after being deported or faced outstanding orders. They were from Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Somalia and the Philippines

Officials said none were gang members or child sex offenders, which is the usual focus of the Fugitive Operations Program.
