Construction to start on trolley’s orange and blue lines

Posted: Updated:

CHULA VISTA (CNS) - Construction on long-awaited improvements on the San Diego Trolley's Orange and Blue lines is set to begin Wednesday.

The five-year, $620 million project will include new track rails that should result in smoother rides on the Orange Line, which runs between downtown and El Cajon, and the Blue Line, which extends from Old Town through downtown to the international border.

Many stretches on the lines, which have existed since the trolley's beginning in 1981, make the often-crowded cars jolt and sway.

Remodeled stations will allow service from 57 new low-floor cars like those used on the Green Line, which goes from Old Town through Mission Valley to Santee.

The project will also include new shelters, overhead wires, switches and signaling devices.
