So here we are, with just a month to go before we hit the pavement for the kick off of the 2010 3 Day For The Cure... and the weather is already putting a damper on things. Is it a coincidence that my walking partner this year will be none other than News 8's Chief Meteorologist Matt Baylow... hmmm. Come on Baylow - I know you have connections - do something about that wet stuff falling from the skies. Until then... time to turn to the trusty treadmill!
I actually love treadmill training and, over the years, have found enough ways to vary my workout that I think it gives me a pretty rounded basis for my 3 Day preparations. Although nothing really beats a good hike on our local roads and trails, this is definitely a great alternative.
One reason I love the treadmill is that I feel it helps me get in some good distance in the few hours I have during the week before I head off to work. I usually walk about a half mile to a mile - gradually increasing the incline - until I find myself tackling the indoor equivalent to the glorious hill at Torrey Pines that greets us just before the halfway mark on day one. Slowing the pace, I slug it out for about half a mile, then turn around and carefully walk backwards for a quarter of a mile. This seems to work out an entirely different set of muscles - although I should warn you - it also prompts some pretty strange looks from your fellow cardio enthusiasts. But really, who cares! The reward is that every part of the workout after that seems pretty easy. I lower the incline, catch my breath and break into a nice, relaxed jog for a few miles. It's all good.
I'm still training in the shoes I wore for last year's 3 Day and am eagerly awaiting the delivery of this year's footwear. I splurged a little this year because, after completing this trek 6 times, I'm keenly aware of just how important a good pair of shoes can be in getting your body through 60 miles with minimal aches, pains and blisters. Oh, the "b" word! Let's not even go there just yet! For now, I will ignore the rain and focus on the treadmill, lots of water and plenty of stretching as I prepare for another 3 Day dream.
