USS Sterett set to leave San Diego on maiden deployment

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The guided-missile destroyer USS Sterett will depart San Diego Friday on its maiden deployment.

The ship, with its crew of about 300 sailors, will join the Abraham Lincoln Strike Group, which is conducting operations in the Western Pacific, according to the Navy.

The Sterett was built by the Bath Iron Works Corp. in Bath, Maine. It was commissioned in Baltimore, Md. about two years ago.

"Since commissioning two years ago in August 2008, the crew has dedicated their time and service to ensure Sterett's mission readiness for her maiden deployment," the ship's commanding officer, Cmdr. Darren McPherson said.

It is the fourth ship to be named after Andrew Sterett, a Naval officer who served in the late 1700s and early 1800s.
