El Cajon officials announce hotline, rewards to help fight graffiti

Posted: Updated:

EL CAJON (CNS) - In response to a proliferation of graffiti in the city, El Cajon leaders announced Monday the creation of a program that offers cash rewards of up to $2,000 to tipsters who help nab taggers.

Police officials joined members of the El Cajon Community Development Corporation and San Diego County Crime Stoppers at Prescott Promenade Park on East Main Street to announce the new effort to address the local graffiti problem.

The mid-afternoon news conference included the unveiling of a billboard publicizing the "El Cajon Tagger Tip Line" and the four-figure cash incentive for information that leads to arrests of vandals.

Last year, there were at least 4,000 incidents of graffiti reported in the East County city -- a "significantly higher" number than during the previous year, according to police spokeswoman Monica Zech.

Tipsters were asked to call (888) 580-8477. The program is also accessible online at www.elcajonpolice.org and the Community Development Corporation at www.downtownelcajon.com.
