Big Apple bites El Cajon

Posted: Updated:

EL CAJON (CBS 8) - In recent years there's been a revitalization effort underway in downtown El Cajon. The sluggish economy and the fact that old stereotypes die hard have slowed the renaissance. Still, along Main Street you detect a bit of pulse. Businesses like the New York Bakery are hoping to put a little soul into the heart of the city.

"I was born into the bakery business. I was raised in it and I married into it," Silvana DiGrigoli said.

For 35 years, the DiGrigoli family has been giving San Diego its daily bread, the last four and a half years from their location across the street from the El Cajon Courthouse.

"We love El Cajon," Silvana said.

And El Cajon seems to love the New York Bakery.

"You've got to come to the New York Bakery to get all the fresh baked goodies," a customer said.

"Everything is baked here. Every day we have three chefs. You have Maria and Jose doing the cookies, and the cookies are still made by hand. "We do mini-pastries, mini-cheesecakes, we do sugar-free for people who are diabetic," Silvana said.

As well as fresh breads and pastries, the New York Bakery also serves up a tasty luncheon menu.

"This is a pizza rustica. We put it in the oven and it gets nice and toasty. It's wonderful," Silvana said.

On Main Street, a New York bakery may look like a bit of an oddity. But alongside some other enterprising entrepreneurs, this family-owned bakery is hoping that others find their comfort zone in downtown El Cajon.
