SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Travelers at Lindbergh Field faced no flight delays or other major inconveniences Friday despite beefed-up security in response to explosive materials found in packages shipped from Yemen and headed to Chicago, an airport spokeswoman said.
The suspicious packages, addressed to synagogues or Jewish centers in Chicago, were shipped by UPS, and were found Thursday night in England and Dubai. The discovery prompted searches today of cargo planes at several U.S. airports, including Newark, N.J., and Philadelphia.
At San Diego International Airport, the traveling public experienced nothing out of ordinary, with the possible exception of more intensive scrutiny at screening areas, officials said.
"Lindbergh Field is operating normally," airport spokeswoman Katie Jones said this afternoon.
President Barack Obama addressed the nation this afternoon, saying the packages constituted a credible terrorist threat.
White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said the president ordered U.S. intelligence and law enforcement agencies "to take steps to ensure the safety and security of the American people, and to determine whether these threats are a part of any additional terrorist plotting."
White House officials added, however, that the situation should not prompt Americans to cancel or alter travel plans.
