Giant Photo: Snapshot of San Diego

Posted: Updated:

MISSION HILLS (CBS 8) - When it comes to viewing San Diego through a lens, one local photographer is definitely living large.

In a custom photo lab on India Street in Mission Hills, size does matter.

"Giant Photo is the oldest photo lab in San Diego. It was started in 1958. It was on 127 F Street where Horton Plaza Shopping Center is right now," Alfred Pagano said.

For the past 35 years, Alfred Pagano has been a part of Giant Photo.

"I was hired in about 1975. I was employed for about five years and bought into the lab and eventually bought all of it. This is the gentleman that hired me back in 1975… Mel Forbes used to work for Channel 8," Alfred said.

Through digital imaging and scanning and adding a few tricks of the trade, Giant Photo is able to work magic.

"We can retouch people's old family photos," Alfred said.

The walls of the shop are filled with their handiwork, which chronicles San Diego lives and times.

Within the walls of this custom lab, images for our past are enhanced in the present and preserved for our future. Here, the way we were will always be.
