OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Democrat Jerry Brown kicked off the final days of what has become California's most expensive gubernatorial campaign with a rally at his headquarters, saying the state faces "tough times."

About 100 supporters crowded into his office in Oakland's warehouse district Saturday morning, chanting "Jerry, Jerry," as the candidate used Biblical references to describe good times and lean ones.

He said the deep recession and California's persistent budget problems mean the next governor will face tough decisions immediately. He left shortly after to catch a flight to Stockton, beginning three days of nonstop campaigning.

Republican Meg Whitman, who has spent $142 million from her personal fortune, also has events planned throughout the state, beginning Saturday in Orange and San Diego counties.
