Wiedners: Digging your own pansies

Posted: Updated:

ENCINITAS (CBS 8) - Flower fanatics were out early Monday perusing Wiedners Gardens in Encinitas, poised to pluck the perfect pansy.

"Started November 1 every year and they dig their own pansies out of the field, there's 15,000," Mary Whiteman said.

But no one gets to dig in Mary's garden until she rings the bell.

"You can take anything you want. There's everything from white to multi-colored to ruffled, everything," Mary said.

Wiedners, which has been around since 1973, has been offering "pick your own" pansies for almost 30 years, and on opening day people come from as far away as Los Angeles.

Picking your own pansy gives you a personal relationship with the plant.

"If you go to the nursery and buy four-inch pots, the flower won't be big. They won't be as healthy, they will be more expensive and you won't have the fun," a customer said.

All you need is a game plan and a little time.

"I have a list. I went through the garden, I'm ready," a customer said.

"I had to take a day off work because I wanted to be here when they opened," another customer said.

It takes more than a green thumb. You need a good set of ears as well.

"They have to stand up and say, 'Pick me,'" a customer said.

If you passed on opening day, don't panic. Wiedners' pansy patch is paced for two weeks of picking.

In 2006, the city of San Diego began allowing political campaigns to electronically file their financial reports, giving the public easy access to information on money in city politics. The county of San Diego wasn’t as quick to make the same kind of information available and continues to lag behind the city’s efforts.
