CLAIREMONT (CBS 8) - A man is in the hospital Monday after driving 120 feet off an embankment.

The accident happened Sunday near Clairemont High School. A witness says he was driving behind the car when he saw it run a red light. He kept his distance, but when he noticed that the car suddenly disappeared, he pulled over.

He grabbed a flashlight and looked down over the embankment, where he saw the car's headlights. He immediately called 911.

"There wasn't too many people out and I was the only guy behind him at the time. He could have probably been there for who knows how long," witness Juan Orozco said.

The car rolled several times down the hill and was crushed by the impact.

Rescue crews used a rope system to pull the man to safety. They say he suffered serious trauma injuries. He was taken to Scripps La Jolla Hospital.
