Calif voters expand redistricting panel

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (AP) — Californians have voted to expand the role of an independent commission tasked with redrawing the state's legislative districts.

Proposition 20 puts the commission in charge of drawing congressional district boundaries. With 17 percent of precincts reporting, 65 percent of voters approved the measure and 35 percent were opposed.

In 2008, Californians voted to create a 14-member panel to handle state Senate, Assembly and Board of Equalization district boundaries — a job previously held by the state Legislature.

An opposing measure, Proposition 27, was trailing with 39 percent of the vote, compared to 61 percent in favor. It would abolish the commission entirely.
